A LITTLE HISTORY
Sedona rocks a culture of spiritual significance tracing back to the Anasazi, a Navajo word meaning "Ancient Ones." Speculated to be vital meeting point between North and South America, evidence suggests inhabitants as early as 8000 BC, though pottery and farming wouldn't be seen till 650 AD. At the height of prosperity around 1300 AD, fields and homes were abandoned, leaving behind shaded trails, petroglyphs, still-functioning irrigation and cliff dwellings that are enjoyed by visitors to this day.
Since the first Anglo settlers in the late 1800s, Sedona has since supported mining, cattle, horses, peach and apple orchards and tourism & mining. Star of the Southwest, over 60 cinematic features captured its rugged romance since 1923. As for today, Sedona's 14,000 residents share the legacy of bountiful resource with eager travelers as both seek the rich reprieve of this enchanted desert oasis.
THE BEATING HEART OF ARIZONA
If Phoenix Valley is the fiery belly of Arizona, Sedona is its wild heart. Renowned for lurid beauty and energetic magnetism, Sedona draws over 3 million visitors annually. The semi-arid climate makes year round visitation popular, with clear blue summers fading into partially grey winters.
THINGS TO DO
Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate a variety of accessible hikes featuring unique sandstone formations, friendly swimming holes, twisted junipers, shaded streams and retired apple orchards. Local artisans fill shop windows with original paintings, pottery, sculpture, jewelry, candles, clothing and more. Spiritual seekers will find a welcoming community of entrepreneurs. Practitioners offer everything from gemstones, vortex tours, and plant medicines to yogic retreats, oracle readings, support groups & sound healing. Expect a range of dining options from classic American comfort food to cowboy gourmet, prickly pear ice cream and CBD infused lattes to international dishes, locally sourced Tex Mex to vegan-friendly cafes.
WHY WE LOVE IT
The stresses of the day dissolve upon entering the valley, as if warded by an invisible barrier. Many point to the electro-magnetic vortices generated by the colossal elements of earth and sky. Perhaps it's the warming rays of sunlight shining down upon pastel painted landscapes, or streams chilled and filtered by red rocks. Whatever it is calls to the healer in all of us. Therefore, quest no further, traveler. Take off your boots and let the old windsong carry your worries far away.
